Safe Storage, Bunkering and Usage of Green Fuel (SafeSBU)

Multiple maritime companies are looking into replacing fossil fuels with green fuels for their fleets With growing demand and use, the current maritime infrastructure becomes obsolete to accommodate the physical qualities of green fuels in relation to storage, bunkering (loading of fuel) and usage. Therefore, the maritime sector requires a revision of safety management for green fuels to contribute to the green transition.

‘SafeSBU’ is a collaboration under the Innomission II partnership, reporting to the Energy Cluster Denmark administration. The project’s main goal is to improve safety and enable small to medium size businesses to implement green fuels, by providing a comprehensive guideline. The project comprise of three interrelated objectives.

First, it aims to produce a comprehensive guideline for the storage, bunkering and usage of hydrogen, ammonia and methanol in the maritime sector. Content includes safety design processes, use cases and approval processes.

Second, it proposes a training course for workers involved in storage, bunkering and usage of green fuels in the maritime sector. The purpose of the course is to ensure that workers possess the necessary skills and expertise to handle green fuels safely.

Third, it seeks to understand the role of safety in public perception of green fuels, and utilize these insights to facilitate open dialogue between the public and industry stakeholders in the ongoing implementation of green fuels in the maritime sector.

The project’s success will be evaluated based on reduction in potential incidents related to health, safety, and environment, increased public acceptance, and shortened time to market for new green fuels.

The Innovation Fund Denmark partly funds the project. DBI coordinates the project, and the partners include FORCE Technology, Complete Solutions, DFDS, Port of Rønne and Aalborg University. The project began in September 2023, and concludes September in 2026.
